The Fake Audit Hook
Cold outreach involving a 'free audit' that conveniently finds dozens of 'critical' errors on your store.
“I ran a quick audit on your store and found some critical issues...”
What this pattern means
These 'audits' are almost always generated by automated scrapers or generic tools like PageSpeed Insights or lighthouse, often misrepresented to sound catastrophic. Predatory actors use technical jargon like 'render-blocking resources' or 'broken schema' to create artificial panic in founders who may not be technical. They ignore the fact that many of these 'issues' are standard Shopify platform behaviors or have zero impact on actual conversion. The goal isn't to fix your store; it's to manufacture a problem that only they can 'solve'.
The psychology of the scam
This pattern targets Loss Aversion—the psychological reality that we fear losing what we have (our store/sales) more than we value gaining something new. By presenting a “technical disaster,” they short-circuit your logical vetting process.
The “expert” positions themselves as a helpful Samaritan who just happened to notice the fire before it burned your store down. This unearned sense of gratitude makes you feel obligated to give them a chance to “fix” the mess they've likely manufactured.
What to do instead
- Ask for a list of the specific URLs and line items referenced in their 'audit.'
- Cross-reference their 'critical errors' with a trusted free tool like GTmetrix or Shopify's own Home dashboard alerts.
- Ask them to explain how these issues specifically impact your conversion rate, rather than just 'site speed.'
- Remember that many 'errors' in automated audits are just standard third-party script behaviors.
