The WhatsApp Pivot

A common tactic to move communication away from official channels and documented histories.

Common Trigger Phrase

Can we continue this conversation on WhatsApp?

What this pattern means

Moving to WhatsApp or Telegram is a classic move to avoid the oversight of platforms like Upwork or Shopify. It significantly reduces your ability to document agreements, report fraudulent behavior, or initiate chargeback disputes. Legitimate agencies and consultants have established professional communication protocols—usually involving email, Slack, or project management portals. If they are in a rush to 'get on a call' on an unmanaged personal messaging app, they are usually trying to hide their trail.

The psychology of the scam

This tactic works by exploiting the artificial intimacy of personal chat apps. By moving to WhatsApp, the scammer bypasses the “business” filters your brain uses for email. Messages feel more urgent, more personal, and more like a conversation with a friend.

Psychologically, this creates a false sense of commitment. Once you've added someone to your personal phone, you're more likely to “be nice” and agree to requests like quick payments or unmonitored access that you would normally flag in a professional portal.

What to do instead

  • Politely insist on keeping all project communication in a documented professional channel (Email/Slack).
  • Reference your 'Company Security Policy' which requires an external audit trail for all vendor interactions.
  • If they claim it's 'faster' or 'easier for photos,' remind them that professional portals handle attachments perfectly well.
  • Consider it a dealbreaker if a consultant refuses to use your official communication platform.
